Free in the City is a compelling story of forbidden love set in Barbados in the late 1600s.
At seventeen, Sarah, a beautiful mulatto slave, is bought for the exorbitant price of £50 by the rich and powerful Thomas Edwards and taken to his plantation. There, she finds herself caught between the desire of her master and the jealousy of his wife.
Thomas struggles with his desire for this young slave girl and the disturbing feelings she stirs in him. Sarah is confused by her response to the master and the compassion she feels for him.
Eighteen years later, Thomas chooses to free Sarah, but can he truly let her go? Will Sarah find love with someone else or will fate make a way for them to be together? Find out in this exciting sequel to The Price of Freedom. This is not a stand-alone novel.

This was the first book I purchased from the Acreage series before realizing I needed to read the first one, stopping midway and purchasing that one, then eagerly returning to this. Truly it was initially my favorite. I loved Sarah and though at first I didn't want to like Thomas, as he was a slave owner and all, the author's treatment of him, as she revealed more and more of this character, made me fall in love with him as well. It was hard for me, then, to come to terms, with the way that book ended. I had rooted so much for this pair, wanted desperately to see them end up together (no matter how unrealistic that might have been) and when that didn't happen I was sorely disappointed. The good news is that the story doesn't end there. Free At Last brings closure to this book. I recommend that any reader buy all three and read them together. Like any good series - Divergent, Twilight, Hunger Games - it is just more satisfying when you follow the story right through to its conclusion.Product details

Free in the City The Acreage Series Book 2 edition by Donna Every Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Brilliant!
I really enjoyed this book. Having read the others in the series I was pleased to see how the characters developed and continued their journeys. I love how the author accurately and easily intertwines the historical aspects of 17th century life in Barbados. Definitely recommending this book and the whole series!
This book had me all in my feelings. I felt pain and love. The characters where well written you loved some and hated others. The storyline was good too and the author did an awesome job telling the story. But the ending I just hated! We spend the whole time reading about Thomas and Sarah forbidden love and rooting for them to be together to have it come to an stupid ending of them being alone not really even friends😒 So I did read the author explanation about how she wanted to stay true to history but news flash this is fiction the whole point of us reading is to escape from real life and believe in a fantasy that love can concur all!!!! Smh I hated and mean hated the ending so much that I don't know if I will give the author another chance. Don't get me wrong she is a great storyteller but I'm a little nervous that I will be let down by her dream snatcher endings😳
I Love history, romance and Jesus and this book caused me to love long waits in lines 😊
I expected the end as I
saw Sarah growing mature in The Lord and from my experience when we are full of His maturity and His Holy Spirit, we become stronger and higher than human uncontrollable passions and feelings . The Holy Spirit gives a satisfaction and a powerful self control that we can rely on and to me Sarah reached this maturity.
Good job Donna as usually , may God continue to lead you and bless you.

I read The Price of Freedom and now this one. I love the characters and their compelling stories. I can't wait to read Free At Last.
This book was an excellent read! From the first page I was drawn into the era of time that is was written - it was a book that I couldn't put down and devoured it in a very short period of time - I look forward to reading more from Donna Every!
This book was an inside look of the goings on within the master's homes during the plantation age. The color of the skin played a major part in how slaves were treated. It seemed those who were of mixed race often drew the eyes of others. This caused new generations of mulatto children to be taken advantage of. Sarah was very fortunate in the fact that her master actually grew to love her. In so doing, he treated her and his daughter well. Whenever I read these types of stories, I can't help but feel sad for the wives. It had to be mental torture for them to endure.
I think the way Donna ended the book was fitting.
Thank you for another great read!
