Slammed by fate and avarice, Olive Oglevee, (A.K.A. Double O) is reduced to living in A Thousand Joys, a rundown resident hotel squatting on a corner deep in the wrong end of Main Street. To supplement her Social Security, she cleans the hotel and is mentor, teacher, and deputy mother to Greta Garbo Katsunori, the ten year old daughter of Divine Mother (A.K.A. The Big Kahuna, First Rate Mother, etc.) the owner and benign despot of the hotel.

Things take a tentative turn for the better when Olive inherits the Lincoln Letters, six letters Lincoln wrote to General Grant during the Civil War. The problem is the letters have been missing for over six decades. Desperate for money, Olive investigates and learns that the letters were put in a time capsule and buried in the common of a town that no longer exists. She engages in more sleuthing, and during a raging thunderstorm, digs up the capsule.

She lugs it back to the hotel, opens it, and discovers that the elements have turned the letters into a fetid mush. There are , however, three items that were not listed as being in the capsule a gold headed hammer, six brass tokens, each with a clue to a puzzle on them, and a key case with several keys and a paper with cryptic numbers on it.

Goaded on by Greta, and with Greta's intimidating canine bodygards in tow, they set out to solve the mystery of the three unlisted items and encounter murder, terror, and dubious justice.

Olive Ogilvy is a former teacher that, due to the death of her husband and forced early retirement, has lost her home and is living in poverty on her Social Security check. Her present residence is the low-rent hotel "A Thousand Joys", run by a Japanese-American lady and her family. As part of her rent, Olive is home-schooling the 10-year-old daughter of her landlord, named Greta Garbo Katsunori. Greta and Olive have a close relationship, despite the friction between the staid teacher and her mercenary and generally mouthy student. Greta also has two very large, 186 lb dogs at her side always, adding to the fun.

When Olive (also known to her former students as "double O") gains possession of four letters from Lincoln to Grant as part of a will, Olive and Greta team up to look for the letters, both needing the cash windfall they would bring. The only problem is that the letters haven't been seen in 60 years. The ensuing search leads Olive and Greta into difficult detective work, old mysteries, and considerable personal danger. A Thousand Joys is an excellent mystery story in itself, but is considerably enriched by Dadmun's deft ability to create many in-depth characters and to have them interact in a richly-detailed story using the mystery as a framework. The suspense that occurs in multiple parts of the book is heightened because you will really care what happens to Olive and Greta.

This is a great story and I will definitely be reading it again.

A THOUSAND JOYS edition by Bentley Dadmun Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I read this book months ago and yet can't forget it. It is unique, quirky, and a fun read. It has a warm heart, but it's not G rated or "spiritual" at all. I was intrigued by the mysteries, and laughed at the cuteness of Greta Garbo and Harrison and Ford. I sympathized with "Double 0"s" hardships and admired her for her tenacity. I give this book the highest recommendation possible. Olive kiss kiss.
A fun read. I enjoyed the relationship between main characters. Being from NH, I also enjoyed the references to NH businesses and places.
I discovered Mr. Dadmun through the Harry Neal mysteries (all wonderful) and then went on to track down and read everything that I could find for my that he has written. This was the last discovery and it is, as are all the others, a true winner. If you like unuusal interesting characters, goodly paced and interesting storyline, and something a bit off the beaten track (in other words well-written and not the usual awful stuff that you can find on the less expensive offerings)...this one is for you.

More please!
I laughed out loud several times while reading this book. The relationship between Olive and Greta, Harrison and Ford kept me reading until I was finished. I enjoyed this book more than any I have read in a long time.
This is a different type of who dunnit. The characters play off each other well, and as a pair they make these stories a feel good type of read, but, a real mystery.
Great story. The witty banter between Olive Ogelvee and her 10 year old student / friend is very entertaining and keeps the story moving. I look forward to another story in this series.
This is very simply a lot of fun. It might even be called "wacky." But for an afternoon's light weight read, it is just plain fun. Like Bentley's other writings I've had the pleasure of reading, the characters all have a half turn off center, but you wouldn't be surprised to run into them in reality. This seems to be the lightest of his works, but I'll always be looking forward to more of Bentley Dadmun's stuff.
